So for those of you are not aware of the series it was first released all the way back in 2005. Developed by AreaNet and published by NCsoft. Unlike some of its other MMO brethren at the time, World of Warcraft, ext. this game was Free to play. So if the idea of paying a monthly or yearly fee upset you, Guild wars was right up your ally. This game of course had its fair share of flaws, but we are not here to talk about that.
Guild wars 2 has been in the works for sometime now and this past weekend ( Feb, 17th- Feb, 19th) the good people over at AreaNet released a beta for the press to play test. Some of the stuff they showed is off the charts of cool.
I am going to go through all the ones I have seen.
1 Character Creation.
Character creation in this game seems almost to fun. For those of you who like to crunch numbers to figure out a perfect character this may be frustrating but for those of you who love the Role Playing in you RPGs this is amazing. You start by selecting from one of fave races and then between 8 classes. If you want more details on that just wait for the Let’s Play videos that we will produce at the time of the games launch. My favorite part is the choice selection. To help build your characters abilities and back story you answer a number of questions. These questions are usual formed in the style of fill in the blank. They are formatted like multiple choice questions. Example ” After a glorious victory you returned to your camp to celebrate where you….” You can answer with responses ranging from ” I got drunk and blacked out” to ” I got in a fight” to ” I had sex”. These seemingly random questions not only affect your character but early enough in the game affects the story you encounter. Once you are done with all the questions you get a custom cut scene.
2 Combat
Combat in Guild wars promises to be fluid and entertaining. You can wield a number of main hand or off hand weapons. Depending on what you pick you slowly can unlock different abilities. A two handed great sword will unlock 5 abilities while a one handed sword will unlock three and a pistol in the off hand will unlock two. In the end you have 5 spells that are equipped based on you weapon choices. This ability makes a character very versatile. You can switch from one weapon to another on the fly changing your abilities at the same time. But with all battle comes damage , no worries though because every class in this game has the ability to heal. In fact there is no dedicated healing class because all classes can heal themselves.
3 Quests
Unlike some of the other MMO’s I have played, not every quests starts and ends with the player talking to some NPC. Throughout the game there are quests that activate randomly. They can be anything from stop the oncoming pirate threat to kill a dragon. These quests are not mandatory but anyone who is in the area can participate no matter the level or whether or not they are members of the same party. These events are scalable meaning the more the merrier.
4 World Vs World PVP
Yea, that is right. World Vs. World Pvp. Every two weeks three servers will be linked up for a massive player vs. player match that takes place on a single map with 4 subsections. The point of these pvp sessions is not only for the fun of it. Those who are victorious win some major goodies for themselves and also all around benefits for their entire server. Imagine hundreds of players all fighting for the same resources.
In the last few hours of the beta things got a little nuts. So many people we plaything that the game crashed repeatedly. This is a beta however and those are to be suspected. In the end I am super excited about this game and hope to get some hands on soon. Plus It’s free to play guys. Common.
